History of Digimon

Digimon is a popular Japanese anime series and merchandise created by Akiyoshi Hongo. This is comprised of anime, manga, toys, video games, trading card games and other media. Digimon started out as Tamagotchi which was a big success with boys even though it was targeted at girls so Bandai created called V-Pets (Digital Monster virtual pet). It has since been re-released for the 20th Anniversary last year.

Digimon really got started with V-Tamer 01 which was the longest Digimon Manga which ran from 1998 to 2003. It was a kid called “Tai” who entered V-Pet turoment but gets turned away because he gets told his Digimon isn’t real. Tai then ends up battling the winner who then they both end up in a draw. Tai then ends up being send to the digital world which at first. He ends up meeting his partners and their job is to save the digital world and then to return home safely.

Digimon went on to have several anime series and movies which were Digimon Adventure 01, Adventure 02, Tamers, Frontier, Data Squad, Fusion and the two latest are Appmon and Digimon Adventure Tri. which is made up as 6 movies. The anime is a multiverse meaning each season is in it’s own universe apart from Adventure 01, 02 and Tri as they’re all in the same universe.

Digimon Adventure 01 

Digimon Adventure 01 is the first ever anime season of the the franchise and ran from 1999 – 2000 and was created by Toei Animation and was dubbed to English by Saban Entertainment. The series premiered on Fox Kids and Toon Disney. MangaUK currently has the licence to the distribution of the home media in the UK and can be currently bought on DVD complete for the first time ever since the original tv airing.

    

Seven kids who go to summer camp in 1999 who end being transported to the digital world who are Tai, Matt, Izzy, Sora, TK, Joe and Mimi where they meet their partners and together they’ve got to save the digital world as well as the human world. Along the way they’ve got to overcome their fears as well as to work together as a team by putting their differences aside in having to stop the dark masters plans. Along the way the Digidestined all work together and form friendships.

Digimon Adventure 02

Digimon Adventure 02 aired from 2000 to 2001 the new series premiered on Fox Kids and Toon Disney just like Adventure 01. MangaUK currently has the licence to the distribution of the home media in the UK of season 1 and 2 and can be currently bought on DVD complete for the first time ever since the original tv airing.

Digimon Adventure 02 carries on a few summers later where Adventure 01 ended. The gate is reopen and the new series introduces 3 new Digidestined which are Davis, Cody, Ken and Yolei along with the original  Digidestined which are Tai, Matt, Izzy, Sora, TK, Mimi, Kari and Joe. In this new adventure they’ve got to save the digital world from the Digimon emperor and find and destroy all the black control spires across the digital world.

Digimon Tamers 

Digimon Tamers was the first season to move away from the Adventure universe. The season debuted in 2001 – 2002 on Fox Kids and was dubbed by Saban Entertainment. It features a brand new group featuring three new DigiDestined which are Takato Matsuki who is the leader of the new group and his partner digimon is Guilmon which he created himself. The other two DigiDestineds are Henry Wong and his partner Terriermon and the other DigiDestined is Rika Nonaka and her partner Renamon.

In the beginning Takato doesn’t realize Digimon are real as he first thought it was just a card game until one day his made up Digimon ends up becoming a DigiEgg.

Digimon Adventure Tri. (Movie Series/OVA)

To celebrate Digimon Adventure’s 15th Anniversary Toei-Anime announced a project back in 2014 which turned out to be a 6 full movie series (OVA) based on the original Digidestined.Toei-Anime teamed up with Fathom Events in September 2016 to show PT.1 Reunion in selected theatres across the USA and Canada. PT.4 Loss was shown in selected theatres back in February and PT.5 and PT.6 will be shown later on in the year.

Shout Factory! has the rights to the home media release in the USA while ManagUK do hold the rights to the home media release for the UK.

It’s been six years since Tai and the rest of his group  went to the digital world for the very first time in 1999. since then the gate to the digital world closed without knowing why three years later. The Digidestined carry on with their normal day to day lives until one day their Digimon partners randomly appeared not knowing how they got back to the real world bring trouble along with them. So the adventure begins again along with new character to join them along the way!
